Automotive Commercials – The Road Ahead

April 16, 2024 by Debbie Grattan

If you’ve ever been captivated by automotive commercials while relaxing on your couch, you know how much the right voice can make you dream about hitting the open road in a shiny new car. In the exciting world of voiceover, the automotive commercials are where the magic really happens. It’s where voice actors get to blend practicality with the imagination of the audience, helping everyone to picture themselves behind the wheel. Voiceover gigs in commercials are the golden tickets for voice actors. They’re not just about pushing products; they’re about making a genuine connection. To really resonate, a voiceover needs to feel like a conversation, not a sales pitch. Voice actors need to be versatile, able to switch up their tone on the fly, and truly visualize who they’re talking to. This helps turn a simple message into a real, relatable chat.

Steering Emotions: Automotive Commercials

When it comes to car ads, the voice behind the scenes has a big job. These commercials are more than just selling a car; they’re selling a lifestyle. The voice needs to sound warm and trustworthy, kind of like a friend telling you about a great restaurant. Automotive commercials need to deliver a sense of excitement and empowerment. Buying this car isn’t just a purchase—it’s a passport to adventure. It is something to be lived! In the competitive car industry, a memorable voiceover can make all the difference. Voice actors don’t just list features; they evoke feelings of speed, safety, and pride. They help you imagine the thrill of driving down an open road and the comfort of knowing your car’s got your back. The right voice can make you feel the luxury of the car’s interior and the pride of ownership, all before you even visit a dealership.

Navigating Automotive Commercial Voiceover

So do we just show up at a studio (Or in your own booth) and read the lines on the paper? Absolutely not. The usual conversational truths and skills associated with the commercial genre are still president in automotive. Genuinity and truth are always paramount in voice acting. The conversational skill does have some crossroads to explore from a performance perspective. For example, A conversation is organic, and the tone of that conversation is dependent on the subject. Imagine these two scenarios, first of all, talking about the loss of a loved one is going to sound and feel sad. Whereas the engagement of a friend or relative is going to sound and feel joyous. The voice actor needs to lean into these emotions whilst delivering them in a conversational manner.

Wrapping up Automotive Commercials

As voiceover work continues to evolve, automotive commercials remain a standout area. The skilled voice actors in this field do more than just talk about cars. They craft a narrative that makes every drive seem like an adventure and every car a keeper of future memories. In the world of automotive commercials, it’s not just about getting from point A to B. it’s about the experience and emotions along the way, brought to life by the voice that guides you. So, the next time you hear a voice in a car commercial, listen to the dreams and adventures they’re inviting you to join. It’s about so much more than just a car!

Why You’ll Fall in Love with New Animated Show ‘MechWest’ (Featuring Mother-Daughter Voice Over Team)

April 11, 2024 by Debbie Grattan

Mech West branding for mother daughter voice over interview
Mech West Featuring Mother Daughter Voice Over Team

Who doesn’t love a good Western? OK, we’ll admit the typical Western may not be everyone’s cup of, say, homemade whiskey. But the new animated series “MechWest” is definitely not typical.

“MechWest” is an enchanting cartoon world where robots, known as mechs, meet the Wild West. While the mechs are generally treated (and mis-treated) by everyone as mere hunks of metal, that’s not the case for the story’s hero Pearl West. She sees beyond their steely exterior, which prompts the most intriguing events to unfold… especially when she meets a special mech named Six.

The delightful concept is just one of a whole saddlebag full of reasons to fall in love with “MechWest.” Here come several others:

It Features a Mother Daughter Voice Over Team

And we’re thrilled about it! The mother and daughter characters in “MechWest” are voiced by myself and my daughter Natalie Rarick. Not only do we have the pleasure of working together on the series, but we were able to share a bit of our background and experience with the show in two local Michiana news outlets.

Check out our interview on ABC57 by clicking here.

While we don’t want to give all the details away, we will share a few more tidbits highlighting additional things to love about “MechWest.”

It Has a Behind-the-Scenes Michiana Angle

My family and I have lived in Michiana for years. When show producers asked if I knew any voice actors ideal for the role of the father, another Michiana local came to mind. He got the part. (Get more details in the above interviews.)

Created by Father Son Production Team Voiced by Mother Daughter Voice Over Team

As if the local angle wasn’t notable enough, the series is also a family affair. Father and son created it. (More details in the above interviews.)

The Hero is Adorable

Main character Pearl West is not the type of hero who reins in stampedes or leaps tall buildings in a single bound. She’s actually a bit dorky and anxious. But that’s what makes her relatable, while her compassion makes her loveable.

Learn more about Pearl West as well as Natalie’s take on playing the part:

It Was Funded by Enthusiasm

“MechWest” met its Kickstarter self-funding goal well before the deadline. That means people were definitely excited about the show. Self-funding also means the producers, writers and other crew members get to retain creative freedom – while serving up free viewing of the indie animated Western on YouTube.

Check out the first episode here:

Animated Alt Western Creating Instant Fans

This show has been in the making for several years, and the interviews tell you why. If you become an instant fan, let the “MechWest” crew know by showing your support.

Hope you enjoy the show as much as we have so far – and ride happily off into the “MechWest” sunset.

Navigating Voiceover Rates – The History!

April 10, 2024 by Debbie Grattan

Navigating voiceover rates… That is a tough one! If a time machine was available to us the voiceover world would look very different 25 years ago. It is an industry that has accelerated, evolved, and changed dramatically in a very short space of time. It is an industry that 100 years ago did not exist outside of live performances such as ventriloquism. So, now it is hard to believe looking at the modern-day industry that only 25 years ago the voiceover industry was a closed club. Very few voice actors were working, voiceover-specific agents held pretty much all the cards and it paid… well… brilliantly! So has that died a death? not entirely… but it is complicated! So let us navigate the history of voiceover rates together in this article and also explore the changes in the industry as a whole.

Microphone in a studio representing the navigating voiceover rates article.

Navigating Rates? How About Navigating Tapes!

Yes! It might sound bizarre or like something from a museum but actually sending demo tapes was the norm in the 80s and 90s. A lot of time and effort not only went into getting material recordings but also getting them copied and posted out to prospective representatives. Home studios were just not a thing! Perhaps the rich and famous may of had something but no doubt 99.99% of people were heading into studios. In fact some of the stars would be driven around in limos going from studio to studio – sounds nice right?

Say Goodbye to Good Rates!

Ok maybe I am being dramatic, we have not said goodbye to good rates entirely, but the landscape is different. Agents no longer hold the gates to all of the work but they do typically host the better jobs. Bigger budget organizations don’t have the time to be wasted on unorganized and unprofessional wannabee voice actors. So they typically avoid marketplaces, AI, and pay-to-play sites. By the way, not all voice actors on the marketplace and pay-to-play sites are wannabee talent, but you can be sure you will find some there.

Money and time passing representing the navigating voiceover rates article.

This reminds me of a story a friend told me. A client of his needed a project done within 24 hours and could only pay $100. My friend told him his rate for that project was $250 and usually it would be an additional $50 for the quick turnaround time but he was happy to give him a $50 discount. The client said no and went to a pay-to-play site. He spent his $100 easily but two days later needed a pick-up. The voice actor he used was a 19-year-old guy in university recording the audio on his phone under a blanket. The client could not get ahold of the student and in turn went back to my buddy! This time my buddy did not let him off for the quick turnaround as the client needed it immediately. So instead of paying $250, he spent $400 all because he chose to lowball and use a platform that invites unreliability.

Navigating Voiceover Rates Wrapped

So there you have it? What else can I say? You can find a harsh accent trying to imitate American English on Fiverr. Or you can find a young guy looking for beer money whilst he is studying via the pay-to-play sites. Oh, and we did not even touch on AI – but that’s ok I have a whole article about that here. The alternative, of course, is to hire experienced, talented, professional voice actors and adhere to the industry standard rates. So to close, I will leave you with one final gimmick. If you are paying with bananas you will get monkeys, but if you pay properly you’ll get everything and more. Sometimes the cheaper option is more time-consuming, expensive, and damaging in the long run.

Commercials vs Narration

April 4, 2024 by Debbie Grattan

In the realm of voiceover work, the distinction between commercial voiceover and narration voiceover represents a fascinating study of contrast, skill, and application. This exploration sheds light on the nuanced differences and unique demands of these two genres, helping both aspiring voice artists and their clientele to appreciate the diversity within the voiceover industry. One thing can not be argued, and that is that both genres are a lot of fun and are exceptionally vast. Let us delve into commercial vs narration voiceover.

The Essence of Commercial Voiceover

A commercial voiceover is an art form designed to captivate and persuade. It’s the voice behind the short, impactful pieces that introduce us to products and services across various sectors like automotive, healthcare, retail, and financial industries just to name a few. The primary aim is to invoke emotion, create a connection, and compel action—all within a brief, often 30 to 60-second slot. This requires a voice that can quickly adapt to different brands’ tones, from upbeat and friendly for retail to trustworthy and reassuring for healthcare.

The World of Narration Voiceover

Narration voiceover, on the other hand, is the storytelling voice. It guides us through a variety of longer-form content such as medical videos, audiobooks, documentaries, and political campaigns. The narrator’s voice serves as our trusted guide, providing clarity, context, and continuity. This genre demands a voice that can maintain a listener’s engagement over time, adapt to the content’s tone—from educational to inspirational—and handle complex terminology with ease.

Library bookshelves and books representing the narration side of the commercial vs narration article.

Commercial and Narration Skillsets

The skill sets required for commercial and narration voiceovers vary significantly. Commercial voiceovers need to master the art of selling without sounding salesy, often needing to convey a wide range of emotions within a short span. They must be versatile, able to switch between different brand voices quickly and excel in delivering lines with a punch. Narration voiceovers, meanwhile, need endurance and consistency. They must keep their voice engaging over long periods, often needing to modulate their tone to match the narrative’s pace and emotion. A strong understanding of the subject matter is also crucial, especially in technical or educational narrations.

Commercial and Narration Demos

Even the demos for these two genres highlight their distinctions. Commercial voiceover demos are like a quick tour through a voice artist’s range, showcasing different styles, tones, and emotions within a minute or so. Narration demos are longer, allowing the artist to demonstrate their ability to maintain interest and energy through a more extended narrative. All demos share some common ground regardless of genre. For example, the need for them to be professionally recorded is essential. In a competitive industry like voice acting, you have to own the very best content you can produce as your advertisement tool if you want to go toe to toe with your competitors.

Commercial and Narration Comparison

At their core, commercial and narration voiceovers serve different purposes. While commercial voiceovers are the sprinters of the voiceover world—quick, dynamic, and designed to leave an immediate impression—narration voiceovers are the marathon runners, requiring stamina, consistency, and a capacity to hold attention over time. Each genre not only utilizes distinct skill sets but also plays a unique role in how we consume information and storytelling in our daily lives. In spite of all of that, a fundamental commonality is that both demand the voiceover actor to produce a truthful performance. The commitment to trust reigns supreme in all avenues of voiceover.

Commercial vs Narration Wrapped

The voiceover industry’s diversity reflects the myriad of ways in which the voice can influence, inform, and entertain. Understanding the differences between commercials and narration voiceovers is crucial for both voiceover artists striving to hone their craft and clients seeking the perfect voice to bring their projects to life. Whether through the brief, impactful nature of commercials or the engaging, sustained storytelling of narration, voiceover artists bring words to life, adding depth and dimension to the messages they convey.

Voice Actors on Social Media

March 29, 2024 by Debbie Grattan

I would like you to start with an internal question for just a moment. Something to think about. What thoughts come to your mind when someone says social media? Perhaps you associate it with enjoyment and relaxation. Perhaps due to work, you find it stressful. Maybe you consider it a pressure to keep up with. Well, whatever your thoughts are on social media one thing can not be debated and that is its place in the current world. Many voice actors avoid it entirely whilst others strictly use it for non-work-related purposes. That leaves one group who are happy to use it and leverage it favorably for their careers.

Voice Actors Guidebook for Social Media

Heavy persistence with those companies and individuals you want to work with is only going to scare them off. You can’t leave 100 likes on someone’s page and hope to book a job the next day. In fact, the person receiving your impromptu interactions may think it is odd and borderline intrusive. Instead, develop a relationship slowly and authentically. For example, if someone you want to develop a professional relationship with posts something of interest, join the conversation and constructively contribute. Over time continue to kindle that approach and eventually, they may become more familiar with you. You may or may not get the opportunity to audition for them depending on if they use social media for casting calls or if they send work to your agent. But should you meet them at a trade show, or should the conversation go in a favorable direction, you will find yourself ahead of your peers having already established a relationship.

What Do I Post on social media?

The biggest detractor people find is what to post. Well, what you had for breakfast this morning probably is not the most interesting topic. That said, everything is relative, if a massive part of your branding is nutrition, then maybe this is exceptionally relevant for your social media. The other consideration is not just what to post but also how often. Some people post multiple times a day whilst others post once a week. I think the sweet spot rests somewhere in the middle for most people. Influencers run social media like a full-time job but 99.9% of us don’t need to take that approach. The other thing to think about is that social media is a good avenue for you to invest in your voiceover community. Have you experienced anything other voice actors might benefit from? Maybe a recent challenge surrounding usage, AI, or connectivity? Whatever it is, someone else there can benefit from your experience.

The Whole Package – The Voice Actor Pro

Most businesses are on social media, it’s part of developing trust with the customer and educating the world on your values. As a voice actor, you are a business. So, though it may be a bit frustrating keeping up with it, instead, think of it as another admin task just like recording a receipt, sending a marketing blast, or updating a headshot. As you delve into social media you will find it adds value to your life. Being among like-minded people is liberating and as you invest in your industry you are also open to your industry investing in you. Though booking more work is awesome, learning, sharing, and enjoying the industry together is important as well.

AI And Voiceover

March 17, 2024 by Debbie Grattan

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has ignited a wave of concern across myriad professions, casting a shadow of uncertainty over roles traditionally revered for their reliance on human creativity and empathy. Among these, the domain of voice acting stands out as a bastion of human-centric artistry. Despite AI’s inroads into the voiceover industry, a compelling case remains for the indispensability of human voice actors. This article delves into the reasons AI cannot eclipse the emotional and creative nuances that human actors contribute to voice acting. Let us explore AI and voiceover together in this article.

Voiceover and Emotional Intelligence

A defining characteristic distinguishing human voice actors from their AI counterparts is emotional intelligence. AI, for all its advancements, falls short of replicating the genuine emotional depth and understanding that human actors embody. The nuanced ability of voice actors to empathize and forge an emotional connection with the audience is unmatched by AI. Though AI may simulate emotions to a certain degree, it lacks the capacity to navigate a voiceover with the flawless emotional resonance a trained voice actor provides.

AI Without Versatility

Versatility stands as another pillar where human voice actors excel. The art of modulating tone and style across varied themes is not merely a matter of vocal adjustment but involves a deep understanding of the emotional subtleties each theme carries. While AI can imitate diverse tones, it inherently misses the mark on grasping these emotional shifts. Furthermore, authenticity in voice acting, engendering trust and connection with the audience, is a quality where AI-generated voices often fall short, lacking the natural warmth and genuineness of human performances.

Modern-Day Voiceover

In voiceovers, mastering conversational reading is crucial, creating an illusion of a personal dialogue with the listener. This technique enhances relatability and comprehensibility, elements AI struggles to emulate due to its inherent scripted and mechanical nature. The spontaneity and fluidity of human conversation cannot be authentically replicated by AI, highlighting another dimension where human actors remain superior.

Voice acting demands a mastery over pace, rhythm, and particularly, breath control—elements vital to maintaining an immersive and flowing narrative. While AI can simulate a specific rhythm or pace, it cannot truly replicate the art of breath control that human actors skillfully employ. This aspect underscores the human element’s importance in voiceovers, emphasizing the unparalleled connection a human can establish over a machine.

AI Voiceover Lacks Artistic Intuition

Voice acting also requires an astute sense of what to avoid—over-dramatization, excessive sales pitches, or inconsistency in performance. These nuances, often honed through experience and emotional intelligence, represent areas where AI conspicuously lacks. While AI’s capabilities continue to advance, achieving a level of performance that convincingly mimics human subtlety remains a complex and potentially cost-prohibitive endeavor.

At its core, successful voiceover work is about crafting an environment that promotes relaxation and mindfulness. This necessitates a blend of technical skill and emotional insight—a balance innately human. AI’s capacity to mimic aspects of voiceovers does not extend to creating experiences that are both technically proficient and emotionally resonant, underscoring the unique value human actors bring to the table.

Human Voiceover, AI Challenges

Despite the challenges posed by AI, voice acting remains a field profoundly anchored in human touch and emotional intelligence. The combination of versatility, authenticity, and the capacity to forge genuine connections with the audience underscores the irreplaceable nature of human voice actors. Their unique skills and emotional acuity are indispensable in guiding audiences through an immersive auditory journey, ensuring that the role of human voice actors remains not only secure but invaluable in the landscape of voiceovers.
