Interview with an Alien: Behind the Scenes of ‘Teek and Tom Explore Planet Earth’

March 27, 2025 by Debbie Grattan

No matter what some horror flicks may depict, not every extra-terrestrial creature is out to conquer the Earth. In fact, some aliens pay us a visit to learn more about our planet – while helping our kids do the same.

Such is the case for the one-eyed purple alien Teek, the star of “Teek and Tom Explore Planet Earth.” This five-part animated series connects Teek with NOAA climate scientist Tom Di Liberto as the two delve into the ocean’s influence on our planet’s weather and climate.

Available for free on the NOAA website, the series is designed for students in fourth to sixth grades. Each animated video comes with downloadable lesson plans for teachers to use in the classroom.

It’s not just the educational and entertainment value that make this series special, either. The two-year project is close to our hearts because my daughter Natalie Rarick is the voice of Teek.

As a 23-year-old voice over artist who already has years of experience, Natalie was an ideal fit for the role. (And I’m not just saying that because I’m her mom…or her manager!)

Natalie says:

“They wanted Teek to be a young-sounding character, while also having a lot of range and being highly directable. So, they wanted a child sound without actually casting a child — which is kind of my specialty!”

‘Teek and Tom’ Fun Tidbits

We wanted to share some fun behind-the-scenes tidbits that made working on this project absolutely out of this world.

Alien Roles Are Popular

Teek is actually the second animated alien character Natalie has recently played. She was the voice of Axis in an e-learning program designed to teach grammar rules and English. While Axis stayed solely in world of animation, Teek gets to interact with live-action actors.

Since Teek is working on an alien class project about the planet Earth, each “Teek and Tom” episode is also jam-packed with tons of information – including a few fun facts even adults may not know.

Natalie says:

“This series is a unique and creative way to teach about Earth’s weather, ocean, and climate, and is as entertaining as it is educational. It also talks about how special Earth’s unique geography and weather systems are – Teek had to come all the way across the galaxy to find it, and there’s nothing like it anywhere else in the universe!”

Project Was a True Collaboration

Not only is portraying a character more creative than recording straight-up narration or commercial work, but it was a true collaborative process. Natalie worked side-by-side with the writing and the animation teams for each episode.

The process went like this:

  • Animators gave Natale their storyboards to portray Teek’s emotions and movements (such as lounging on a space couch or pulling a heavy object)
  • Natalie recorded her performance, based on info from the storyboards
  • Animation team incorporated Natalie’s emotion, tone and pacing into the final visuals

Natalie says:

“That kind of collaboration is one of my favorite things to do as VO talent!”

Alien Boy Scout Was the Blueprint

Natalie has been doing voice overs since she was a kid, and child voices remain her most successful market. She also works with kids in her day to-day life, as a teaching artist, giving her tons of references to pull from.

Once she was cast as Teek, there were several tweaks made to the character. Teek started as a boy alien, then became a girl alien, until the team finally settled on a non-binary alien.

Natalie’s versatility and experience let them experiment with several approaches before landing on a style with which they most connected.

Teek fits very comfortably into her Child / Character and Animation voice profile, though their journey took them all throughout the range of Natalie’s voice! In general, children’s voices sound more androgynous than adults, as young boys and girls both have higher pitched voices. For Natalie, boy voices command a slightly lower pitch, more rasp, and a more nasal sound. Girl voices, however, sit higher on her soft palate, and generally sound “sweeter.” While each character is unique, she often pulls inspiration from animation that she enjoys — including Aang from “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

Natalie says:

“Teek is also a highly enthusiastic and playful, but also very caring and curious little alien, so I portrayed them as very high-energy but still believable. When recording, I liked to picture Teek like a green alien Boy Scout – with the uniform and everything!”

Marshmallows Brought Out the Best

Once the sound of Teek’s voice was pegged down, it was time for Natalie to develop the character’s personality. She says Teek’s personality came through the most during some of the lines relating to food.

Natalie says:

“Teek LOVES eating marshmallows, and the more we recorded lines about how much Teek loved food, the more the writers kept adding! I think that quirk of Teek being a tween who loves sweets made them very relatable to kid audiences who might be watching this show.”

Photo from oceantoday.noaa.gov

Aliens Move Apartments – But Still Sound the Same

The biggest challenge with the role was recording some of the pickups out of context. The project took two years to complete, with a lot of changes to the script along the way. It’s imperative to make the pickups fit smoothly with the rest of the audio. This requires finding the exact emotion, tone and placement of the voice as in the original recording.

Natalie had also moved to a new apartment during the project, so her studio sound had to perfectly match her old studio as well. Two years for a project of this scope is not surprising.

Natalie says:

“Animation of that scale takes quite a long time! And voiceover is actually one of the quicker parts of the process. They say that, for really polished animation, it takes about a week of work to complete 6 seconds of visuals. Of course, for VO artists, it takes about 30 seconds to complete 6 seconds!”

The Best Part of the Project

The most enjoyable aspect of many projects is seeing pieces of the finished product as you go along. This was definitely the case for Natalie with “Teek and Tom.”

Natalie says:

“With the final few episodes still left to record, I remember seeing the ‘Intro’ for the first time and feeling so gratified and excited to hear my voice finally paired with Teek in a polished animation. Once a project is completed and polished like that, I can almost forget it’s me! That voice belonged to Teek now.”

Voicing Voting Guides

March 25, 2025 by wadmin

Most people don’t get excited about reading through dense election materials. Voting guides? Not exactly beach reading. But that’s where a good voice actor comes in. The right voice can turn “Here’s how to fill out your absentee ballot” into something that actually holds your attention for more than six seconds. Debbie Grattan has a way of making even the driest voting instructions sound like a conversation you didn’t know you needed. Debbie’s been voicing political content for years and that includes everything from educational segments to campaign PSAs. So, when it comes to voicing voting guides, she’s got a knack for keeping things clear, relatable, and easy on the ears. Let’s break down how that works.

What Are Voting Guides, Really?

Picture this: You just got a glossy voter information packet in the mail, and it’s packed with candidate bios, ballot measures, voting deadlines, and words like “provisional” and “ranked-choice.” Your first instinct? Maybe toss it in a pile and forget about it until the last minute. That’s where voting guides come in. They’re meant to walk people through all that stuff. Things such as what the different positions are, who’s running for what, and what that local tax measure actually means. They’re like the CliffsNotes of your civic duty. When you pair them with a solid voiceover, you’ve got something people might actually listen to. Let’s say a local nonprofit wants to reach first-time voters on Spotify. Or a state elections board is creating an animated explainer video for their website. Debbie’s voice helps all of that feel less intimidating and more like, “Hey, here’s what you need to know, no pressure.”

How Voice Actors Help With Voting Guides

When it comes to voicing voting guides, the voice actor has one main mission: don’t lose the listener. Seriously, these guides are full of terms and dates and rules and if the delivery feels like a voicemail from your accountant, people are going to zone out fast. Debbie walks the line beautifully. She brings energy without overdoing it and keeps the tone neutral so the message feels trustworthy, not pushy. Think more “knowledgeable neighbour” than “political ad shouting match.” Whether she’s explaining how to get a ballot in the mail or laying out a timeline for early voting, Debbie’s delivery keeps it all human. No condescension. No fluff. Just a calm, steady voice that says, “You’ve got this.”

Why a Good Voting Guide Voice Matters

Let’s face it: there’s a lot of noise during election season. Campaigns are everywhere. Social media is full of opinions. Then trying to find actual, helpful information? That’s harder than it should be. That’s why voting guides matters! they cut through the noise and give people the facts. But to do that effectively, they need a voice that people trust. Debbie Grattan has that kind of voice. She sounds like she knows what she’s talking about (because she does), but she never sounds like she’s talking at you. There’s a friendliness in her delivery that makes even the most procedural stuff feel accessible.

For example, imagine a statewide PSA playing on the radio that explains how to register if you’ve recently moved. You could rattle off a list of steps in a robotic tone, or you could have Debbie explain it like someone who’s actually been there, maybe even with a quick “yep, we’ve all been through the DMV lines” kind of aside. That trust-building tone is everything. People are far more likely to engage with voting materials when the voice feels genuine.

Debbie Grattan: Voicing Voting Guides with Clarity and Warmth

Debbie’s been around long enough to know that clarity wins. But that doesn’t mean being boring. She brings warmth and confidence to every voting guide she voices, turning potentially confusing topics into something folks can actually follow. Whether it’s a quick explainer about absentee ballots for busy college students or a state-wide campaign urging seniors to check their registration status, Debbie’s voice helps the message land. It’s not about drama or spin, it’s about helping people take action, plain and simple. So if your next political campaign or voter education project needs a voice that people will actually listen to (and maybe even appreciate), Debbie’s got you covered.

Social Advocacy Campaign Voices

March 21, 2025 by wadmin

When people think of political voiceovers, they often picture those high-energy campaign ads that flood the airwaves during election season. But the truth is, political voiceover goes way beyond the ballot box. We’re talking about social advocacy campaign voices designed to inform, inspire, and nudge people toward action. Whether it’s encouraging voter participation, rallying support for a cause, or educating the public on key issues, the right voiceover doesn’t just share information, it makes people care. This is where Debbie Grattan shines. Her voice has that perfect balance of warmth and authority, making messages feel engaging rather than preachy.

What Are Social Advocacy Campaigns, Anyway?

Social advocacy campaigns aren’t just about getting people to nod along and think, “Well, that’s interesting.” They’re about lighting a fire under them, making them pause and go, “Wait a second—why haven’t I done something about this yet?” Whether it’s about pushing for policy change, mobilizing communities, or simply spreading awareness, these campaigns need to hit home. They don’t do that with monotone, lifeless narration. A voiceover for a social advocacy campaign has to walk a fine line. Too forceful? People tune out. Too neutral? It lacks impact. The goal is to sound like someone who genuinely cares and not someone reading a script. That’s why Debbie brings an approach that’s both natural and compelling, giving these campaigns a voice that feels like a trusted friend sharing something important.

The Power of the Right Voice

Civic engagement is one of those phrases that sounds a little stiff, but at its core, it’s just about people getting involved. Whether that’s voting, volunteering, or supporting local initiatives, it all starts with awareness. A great voiceover can be the thing that pushes someone from thinking, “I should probably do that” to actually doing it. Debbie knows how to make these messages stick. She doesn’t sound like a robotic PSA reading government-issued talking points. Instead, she delivers them with the kind of sincerity that makes people lean in and listen. Think of it like a conversation with that one friend who always knows what’s going on but never makes you feel bad for being out of the loop. That’s the energy Debbie brings to social advocacy campaigns; informative, relatable, and just persuasive enough to get people moving.

Voices Matter in Social Advocacy Campaigns

Here’s the thing: a social advocacy campaign can have the best script in the world, packed with compelling facts and powerful messaging. But if the voice delivering it doesn’t connect, the whole thing falls flat. Tone is everything. Some campaigns call for a calm, reassuring presence (think mental health initiatives or community support programs). Others need a bit of urgency and passion, like rallying support for climate action or social justice causes. Sometimes, a message needs to be direct but approachable, like those voter registration ads that remind you nicely but firmly that democracy works better when you participate.

Debbie has the versatility to meet all those needs. She knows how to match her delivery to the heart of the message, whether it’s a heartfelt plea for change or an energetic call to action. That’s what makes her voice a game-changer in social advocacy campaigns. It’s not just about reading words, it’s about making them count. In the world of social advocacy, voiceover is more than just a sound, it’s impact too. With the right voice behind the message, campaigns don’t just inform. They inspire action.

Personalized Political Narrative

March 13, 2025 by Debbie Grattan

Politics isn’t just about red or blue! It’s about making real connections. Political voiceover work plays a massive role in educating the public, spreading awareness, and inspiring action. But when it comes to connecting with voters on a deeper level, personalized political narrative takes things to the next level. This is the kind of voiceover that makes a campaign feel personal, like the candidate is speaking directly to you. When you need a pro who can bring that kind of authenticity, Debbie Grattan is the one to call. Her ability to take a script and transform it into a message that feels natural, engaging, and personal is why she’s trusted in the world of political voiceovers.

What Makes Personalized Political Narrative So Effective?

Think about the last time you heard a political ad that actually made you stop and listen. Chances are, it wasn’t because of flashy graphics or dramatic music. Instead, it was because the voice felt genuine. That’s the whole point of a personalized political narrative. Whether it’s urging people to vote, explaining a candidate’s stance, or rallying support for a cause, the delivery makes all the difference. Debbie Grattan knows how to strike that perfect balance between professional and relatable. She doesn’t just read a script; she turns it into something that sounds like a trusted friend is filling you in on something important.

Connection and Authenticity – Personalized

Political messaging is about more than just relaying information. It’s about getting people to care. If a message sounds robotic or rehearsed, that connection is lost. Debbie understands that people respond to voices that sound real, not overly polished or dramatic. Imagine you’re watching a local political ad. Instead of a stiff, monotone delivery, you hear a voice that feels warm, engaging, and honest. That’s the magic of a skilled voice actor. Debbie brings that kind of authenticity to every project, making political messages feel more like a conversation than a lecture.

Personalized Political Narrative – More Than Just Campaign Ads

Political voiceover isn’t just about campaign season. There are public service announcements, educational messages, and civic engagement efforts that all rely on a trustworthy voice. Maybe it’s a reminder about voter registration deadlines or an explainer on a new local policy. No matter the subject, Debbie Grattan knows how to make sure the message doesn’t just get heard, it gets remembered too. In an age where people tune out a lot of political noise, having a voice that cuts through and resonates is invaluable.

Why Trust Matters in Political Narrative Voiceover

Let’s face it, people are sceptical of political messages. There’s a fine line between persuasion and over-the-top salesmanship. That’s why trust is everything. If a voice sounds forced or insincere, the message won’t land. Debbie Grattan has mastered the art of sounding natural and credible, ensuring that every word feels honest and engaging. Whether it’s a heartfelt plea for community involvement or a firm stance on policy, she delivers in a way that audiences believe.

The Future of Political Narration

As the political landscape evolves, so does the way messages are delivered. People expect authenticity more than ever, and Personalized Political Narrative is at the heart of that shift. The future of political voiceover isn’t about sounding like a scripted ad, it’s about making real connections. That is exactly what Debbie Grattan does best. Whether she’s encouraging voter participation, clarifying an issue, or giving a campaign a relatable voice, she brings a level of trust and credibility that today’s audiences expect.

In a world full of political noise, the right voice can make all the difference. With Debbie Grattan behind the mic, that voice is clear, compelling, and most importantly-genuine.

Civic Engagement Voiceover

March 11, 2025 by Debbie Grattan

When it comes to civic engagement voiceover, it’s all about getting people to care about their communities, their voices, and the impact they can have. Whether it’s nudging folks to hit the polls, support a local initiative, or simply stay informed, a good voiceover can turn a message from background noise into something that actually sticks. For voice actors like Debbie Grattan, this kind of work isn’t just about reading words off a script. It’s about creating an emotional connection that makes people stop scrolling, listen, and, most importantly, act!

Civic Engagement Voiceover: Making Messages Stick

The trick to a great civic engagement voiceover? It needs to feel natural. Nobody likes being talked at, but they’ll listen if it sounds like someone they know and trust is giving them a heads-up. Whether it’s an ad reminding people about early voting or a radio spot about a community clean-up, the right voice can turn a simple announcement into something that actually sparks action. Debbie has a way of making these messages sound authentic and encouraging. They are never stiff and never robotic. Her delivery helps listeners feel like they’re part of something bigger, instead of just being another name on a mailing list.

Political Voiceover: More Than Just Campaign Ads

When people hear “political voiceover,” they usually think of fast-talking campaign ads full of dramatic music. But there’s a whole other side to it. A lot of civic engagement messaging isn’t about pushing a candidate. It’s about getting the word out on issues that actually affect people’s daily lives. Think about a public service announcement explaining new voter ID laws or a video from a non-profit urging folks to speak up about local policies. These aren’t about selling a person or a party, they’re about making sure people know what’s happening and how they can get involved. That’s where a skilled voice actor like Debbie comes in. She knows how to sound friendly, approachable, and clear, so the message doesn’t just go in one ear and out the other.

Why Civic Engagement Voiceover Matters

At its core, civic engagement voiceover is about inspiring people to take action. That could mean encouraging someone to volunteer at a local food bank, sign a petition, or just show up at a town hall meeting. The challenge? No one likes to be guilt-tripped into something. The best way to get people engaged is to make them feel empowered, not pressured. Debbie understands that balance—her voice carries warmth and enthusiasm without ever feeling overbearing. Whether she’s narrating a video for a grassroots organization or lending her voice to a government PSA, she keeps the message engaging, informative, and—most importantly—human.

Keeping It Authentic

One of the biggest mistakes in civic engagement messaging is sounding too scripted. If it feels like a stiff, rehearsed announcement, people tune out. The best voiceovers sound real, like someone who actually cares about what they’re saying. That’s one of Debbie’s strengths. She has a way of making even complex topics feel accessible. Whether it’s a script about voter registration deadlines or the importance of local elections, she delivers it in a way that feels natural, friendly, and easy to absorb. At the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to inform people, it’s to make them feel like they have a stake in what’s happening. When a message is delivered with authenticity, it has a much better chance of actually making a difference.

The Impact of Civic Engagement Messaging

Small actions add up. A single vote, a single voice, a single person showing up to a community event—it all contributes to something bigger. Civic engagement messaging is about making sure people realize that their actions matter. Debbie’s voiceover work helps bridge the gap between information and action. With a tone that’s relatable and inviting, she turns public service messages into something that people actually want to hear. Because at the end of the day, civic engagement isn’t just about getting the message out, it’s about making sure it lands.

Public Service Announcements

March 6, 2025 by Debbie Grattan

When people think about political voiceovers, campaign ads usually take center stage. But there’s a whole other side to it. One that keeps the public in the loop, encourages civic involvement, and makes sure important updates don’t get lost in the shuffle. Whether it’s breaking down voting procedures, delivering endorsement messages, or educating the public on key issues, political voiceovers play a much bigger role than most realize. Debbie Grattan understands this inside and out. With years of experience, she’s mastered the art of delivering clear, approachable messages that turn complicated subjects into something people can actually connect with. On this page, let’s take a closer look at public service announcements and why voiceover is a crucial part of making them work.

Public services vehicles representing the Public Service Announcements article.

Public Service Announcements: Spreading the Word

Public Service Announcements, or PSAs, exist to share crucial information with the public. Think about the last time you heard one. Perhaps it was during a big health crisis, a natural disaster, or even a local community update. PSAs serve as a direct line to the public, making sure they get the information they need when they need it. Debbie Grattan has voiced plenty of PSAs, using her calm and engaging style to make messages more relatable. A well-delivered PSA isn’t just about reading words—it’s about ensuring the message lands with the people who need to hear it. A familiar, trustworthy voice helps bridge that gap and makes all the difference in how the information is received.

Why the Right Voice Makes a Difference

Ever heard a PSA that felt robotic or distant? It doesn’t really work, does it? That’s because people don’t just want information, they want to hear it from someone who sounds real. They want to hear it from someone who understands what they’re going through. That’s why authenticity is key. Debbie brings an approachable quality to her reads that makes people feel like they’re being spoken to, not talked at. In a world where trust is everything, the voice behind the message needs to sound genuine. PSAs aren’t just about sharing facts; they’re about making sure people believe and act on what they hear. A voiceover that conveys warmth, credibility, and relatability makes all the difference.

A voting stamp representing the Public Service Announcements article.

Public Service Announcements in Politics

PSAs go far beyond emergencies. They’re a constant presence in political communication, keeping the public informed on policy updates, voting processes, and community initiatives. Government agencies, advocacy groups, and organizations rely on PSAs to reach people where it matters most. Debbie has been behind the mic for numerous PSAs that tackle everything from election reminders to public health campaigns. Her ability to deliver messages clearly and effectively ensures that important announcements don’t just go in one ear and out the other. Whether it’s outlining voting deadlines or breaking down new legislation, her delivery ensures clarity and impact.

Making Sure the Message Reaches Everyone

One of the greatest strengths of PSAs is their ability to connect with different audiences. Whether it’s younger voters getting their first ballot or older citizens needing updates on healthcare services. The messaging has to resonate with a wide range of people. That’s where the right voiceover comes in. Debbie Grattan knows how to adjust her tone depending on the audience and the nature of the message. Some PSAs need an upbeat, reassuring tone, while others require a more serious, empathetic approach. Finding the right balance is what makes a PSA effective, and Debbie’s expertise ensures the message always lands the way it should.

Public Service Announcements are an essential part of keeping the public informed. The voice behind them plays a big role in making sure the message is heard. Debbie Grattan’s ability to bring warmth, clarity, and authenticity to her work makes her a standout choice for PSA voiceovers. Whether it’s a local community update or a nationwide campaign, the right voiceover ensures people don’t just hear the message, they actually listen too.
